Majors in Education
(145KB .pdf file)
CGCC's Teacher Education Program offers courses to get you started in any of the following traditional degree options:
Early Childhood (Birth through third grade)
Special Education (Grades K-12)
Elementary Education (Grades 1-8)
Secondary Education (Grades 7-12)
Areas of Specialization or Content Emphasis
Education majors should plan for an area of specialization (18-24 credit hours in a subject field) as a field of expertise. It is recommended that the area of emphasis be a "core subject" such as:
English, reading or language arts
Math
Science
Social studies
Technology
Requirements may vary among university programs. An advisor or education faculty can assist you in making this determination.
Mesa Public Schools 'Grow Your Own' Program
The Mesa Grow Your Own Program is a 2 + 2 program that starts Mesa Public Schools high school students thinking about a career in education. Students may elect to join the program in their senior year in high school, or they may be nominated by a teacher or counselor at the high school.
Gilbert Public Schools Cohort
Special education instructional aides with Gilbert Public Schools originated a cohort group working towards AA degrees to qualify under
No Child Left Behind
. An advisor can assist with scheduling and information about possible tuition reimbursement or financial assistance can be obtained from Jenine Davison at GPS.
AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps opens the door for citizens to serve in a variety of ways. Through their service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps members address critical needs in American communities. Teacher education students may earn $2000-$4000 in scholarship money through their field experience.
Scholarships
There are many scholarship opportunities availale to education majors. CGCC education faculty fully support students in their efforts to secure financial aid and recognition for their hard work.
