Gov. Napolitano Signed Sudan Divestment

Hey HEAT members:

I was going to leave you alone over spring break but today I received some great news- Arizona Divested!!!! Gov. Napolitano signed House Bill 2705, targeted Sudan divestment, into law. This is the first bill that the governor has signed into law in the 2008 legislative session. Arizona is 24th state to divest, and the first state to pass a prohibition on state contracts with companies operating in Sudan.

House Bill 2705 is a law that will divest pension funds from those targeted corporations that materially assist the Sudanese government in carrying out the genocide in Darfur. The bill targets foreign companies involved in mineral extraction, weapon sales, and the oil industry. In addition, the legislation prohibits companies operating in Sudan's military, oil, mineral extraction and power sectors from receiving Arizona state contracts. Some of you are aware that we have started working with CGCC to divest the school's funds. I'll send you an update on that next time I receive new info.

In peace,
Beth Anne

HEAT Mission & Goals
The HEAT's (Hands-on, Environmental, Action, Team) mission is to inform, inspire, and ignite individuals regarding environmental issues and humanitarian disasters.

Environmentally, we, personally and collectively, seek to create a sustainable world that satisfies current needs without jeopardizing the livelihood of future generations. We do this by cultivating awareness about dangerous behaviors (such as global warming) that effect the earth's environment and then promoting protective action. The HEAT's commitment to create a sustainable earth is coupled with our devotion to people on the earth.

Our humanitarian response to crises is not based on charity but on equality and justice. That response materializes in different venues: fundraising, educating, etc. This school year (2007-2008) we are calling Chandler-Gilbert Community College to join with us in STANDing against the atrocious genocide that is killing people in Darfur, Sudan. The STANDing synergy is dedicated to Stop genocide, Take action, Alleviate inequality, Negotiate peace, and Donate resources. The HEAT's mission is accomplished by ordinary, diverse individuals who are ignited to generate an extraordinary impact.
