picture

Service-Learning combines community service with academic instruction focusing on critical-thinking and problem-solving, values clarification, social and personal development, and civic responsibility. CGCC students have been performing meaningful service at community agencies to learn experimentally during one-day events, class projects, and individual placements for over 15 years. The Service-Learning Office in Student Life coordinates service-learning at CGCC with help from Faculty Liaison and with oversight from the Service-Learning Leadership Team.

Service-Learning Definition

Service-Learning is a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning through guided reflection. Areas of focus include:
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Values Clarification
  • Career Exploration
  • Social and Personal Development
  • Civic and Community Responsibility
Service-Learning enhances what is taught by extending students, learning beyond the classroom and providing opportunities for student to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real life situations in their communities, locally, nationally, and globally.

The purpose of these programs is to provide students with educational opportunities in community service by placement in government agencies, educational entities, civic organizations or citizen advocacy groups.
