The Emerging Science and Mathematics Scholars Awards Program at Chandler-Gilbert Community College honors and rewards the academic excellence of under-prepared, at-risk and nontraditional students who began their college careers by taking at least one developmental mathematics course. The program is established to affirm that students taking developmental mathematics courses can succeed at a level that mirrors or surpasses that of other college students, and also to produce a "can do" attitude in other students taking developmental mathematics courses. Despite their initial placement, our Emerging Science and Mathematics Scholars succeeded not only in their developmental mathematics courses, but also in science and other college-level courses.
