Welcome to Foreign Language Tutoring
|
The Learning Center provides free drop-in tutoring assistance to students currently enrolled in CGCC Spanish courses. Other languages are available by appointment and depend on the availability of a tutor. Spanish tutoring takes place on the second floor of the Library, room L228 at the Pecos Campus. Language tutors can assist students with homework exercises, writing assignments, pronunciation practice, and conversational skills. Click here for a schedule of current tutoring hours. No appointment is necessary for Spanish tutoring. Students needing additional information or assistance should contact the Learning Center at 480.732.7231.
Some tips for making the most of a Spanish/Foreign Language tutoring session:
DO
- Learn the basics before you see a tutor. A tutor cannot help you until you have memorized basic verb endings and elementary vocabulary.
- Try to complete your workbooks and homework before you come for tutoring. The tutor will assist you with your assignments, but will not complete them for you. As the tutors' role is one of support, the ultimate responsibility for all work as to correctness, completeness, etc. rests with the student.
- Write down your questions before you come. Sometimes tutees forget what was troubling them by the time they get to tutoring. Earmark pages in the text that have given you trouble. Make questions as specific as possible.
- Study at least one hour per day (every day) between tutoring sessions.
DON'T
- Don't wait until the last minute to seek help. Tutoring hours are limited, and if you wait until right before an exam, you may not have enough time to practice and review before the exam.
- Don't expect a tutor to make up for a lack of studying on your part. Tutoring is like the icing on a cake. It can be wonderful, but you need the cake to hold it.
