Sowore Omoyele has been detained many times in Nigeria's long struggle for democracy. His career of resistance began in1989, when he took part in student demonstrations protesting the conditions of an International Monetary Fund loan of $120 million for Nigeria. In 1992 at University of Lagos, he led 2,000 students in protest against Nigeria's corrupt government. He's been imprisoned eight times and tortured, but he remains committed. "We've had supposed democracy for six and a half years and people still can't eat," he says. "Who has benefited? There's no basic health care. We don't have running water. We don't have electricity, no basic education...Shell and Chevron are among the biggest corporations in the world and they have benefited only a few people, the clique that runs the country. The Niger Delta area is polluted, occupied and heavily militarized. People get killed on behalf of the major oil companies every day. That cannot be right."

SEE Your World
Wednesday, March 29
11:15 am-12:30 pm

Venezuela, the world's fifth largest oil producer, has 70% of its people in poverty. Since Hugo Chavez was elected President in 1998, he has initiated a "Bolivarian Revolution" to democratize and economically develop Venezuela. From organizing new a constitution passed by the people to using oil money to create low-interest loans, he has pushed for growth from within Venezuela to insure the economic security of Venezuelans. CGCC History Instructor, Dr. Paul Petrequin will share observations from his recent ten-day visit to Venezuela and from his current research to show how the Chavez government is trying to accomplish its new vision as well as what opponents are doing to undermine the revolution.

The Impact of Groundwater Pumping: Robert Glennon, author of Water Follies
SEE Your World
Thursday, March 30
10:00 am-11:00 am
Student Pavilion
The excessive pumping of aquifers has created an environmental catastrophe known only to few scientists, a handful of water management experts, and those unfortunate enough to have suffered direct consequences. As our groundwater use had increased, groundwater pumping has caused rivers, springs, lakes and wetlands to dry up, the ground beneath us to collapse, and fish, birds, wildlife, trees and other vegetation to die. Moreover, this ongoing overdraft and the human civilization it supports cannot be sustained much longer. In this engaging talk, Robert Glennon the author of Water Follies, will illustrate the scope of the problem with cases from around the country. These water follies are tales of human foibles including greed, stubbornness, and especially the unlimited human capacity to ignore reality. Robert Glennon is the Morris K. Udall Professor of Law & Public Policy at the University of Arizona.
This SEE Your World speaker series event is available for all students and open to the public. Instructors, please send an e-mail to Chris Schnick if you are taking your entire class to this event.

Malik Rahim, born and raised in New Orleans' Algiers neighborhood, has worked as an organizer for decades around housing and prison issues. During Hurricane Katrina, Malik stayed to assist the community and has been speaking out about racism and the failures of government exposed by the Katrina disaster. To counter the powerful corporate forces trying to control the rebuilding, Malik has founded Rebuild Green to work with community-based organizations' efforts to advance social justice and environmental sustainability. Malik states, "By focusing on green building technology, renewable energy, mass transit systems, and green community development that empowers local people to take control of their local resources, the rebuilding of New Orleans can take our city from being a symbol of disaster to being a prototype sustainable city of the future."
