What is an e-Learning course?

CGCC offers different kinds of e-Learning courses. Learn more about the different course formats.

I’m thinking about taking an e-Learning course. What should I do?

If you’ve never taken an e-Learning course, the first thing you should know is that these classes work better for some students than for others. To find out if e-Learning is likely to be a good fit for you, complete the “Are You Ready for e-Learning?” survey.

I’m still not sure that this type of class is right for me. Is there someone that I can talk to?

You can either visit our Advising Office at the college campus, or go to Online Advising. If you still have questions, you could also Contact the e-Learning Instructor for the course you are interested in (textbook and syllabus information will be available when the class starts).

I know that I am ready for an e-Learning course. How do I find out what courses are available?

How do I register for an e-Learning course?

As with any other CGCC class, you can either go to the Registration Office at the college campus, or go to Online Registration.

How do I get my books for my e-Learning course?

You can get your textbooks either at the CGCC Bookstore , or by visiting its website .

Will there be an orientation for my e-Learning course?

Many of the e-Learning instructors at CGCC hold a mandatory orientation for all students registered in their courses. Failure to attend a mandatory orientation will likely result in your being dropped from the course. Check the e-Learning Courses page or the schedule of classes to determine whether you have an orientation. If you have registered early, you will receive a reminder by mail; however, it is always the student’s responsibility to find out if there is an orientation for the course.

I’ve just started an e-Learning course, and my instructor says we’ll be using Blackboard. What is that, and how do I use it?

Blackboard is the course management system used by most of the e-Learning instructors at CGCC. That is, most of the course websites are run via Blackboard, so you’ll need to know how to log on to the system in order to access your course materials. You can get instructions on how to obtain your username and password, as well as how to log in, by going to the Blackboard Login Instructions . If you need someone to help you through the login process, assistance is available at the Computer Lab .

I’ve just started an e-Learning course, and my instructor says we’ll be using ePortfolio. What is that, and how do I use it?

ePortfolio is a webpage management and development tool that some instructors use to make course materials available to students. In some courses, you might also be required to use the program to develop your own materials. More information can be found on the ePortfolio Instruction Page .

I’m in an e-Learning course, and my instructor says that we’ll be using the Testing Center. Where is it, and what are the hours of operation?

Typically, instructors who require on-campus testing for their e-Learning courses will have you take your exams in the Testing Center. The Testing Center is located on the Pecos campus , in Room A152 (within the same building as Registration). Hours vary from semester to semester, so be sure to check with your instructor for the most current hours

I have a research project for my e-Learning class. Where can I look for resources and materials?

The CGCC Library has an extensive collection of online databases that students can access online, as long as their student ID is validated in the Library. Students can also work online with a librarian at Ask a Librarian .

I’m really struggling with the material in my e-Learning class. Where can I get some extra help?

The on-campus Learning Center , located on the second floor of the library, has tutoring available for most subject areas for any student registered for a CGCC credit course.

Where can I get help if I run into problems with the technology?

If you’re having problems accessing your e-Learning course, contact your instructor immediately; he or she can determine if you’re registered for access in the course site. Most often difficulties arise when students aren’t registered or fully paid. If you’re having problems with your login name and/or passwords, or with accessing media provided by your instructor, you can get assistance from the CGCC Computer Lab , located in the B Building. Students are responsible for their own personal hardware and software and reliable internet connection.
