Disability Resources & Services (DRS) Disability Resources & Services Mission Values student diversity by promoting self advocacy, independence, access, and integration to a global student life experience that leads to student success for all individuals with a documented disability according to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Program Role & Function To provide access and support to students who have a documented disability according to The Americans with Disability Act (ADA), and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. All placement, testing and course accommodations will be implemented and monitored by the DRS office. Support services are available and assist in empowering students to gain skills and knowledge needed to make informed decisions, and become self-directed in their academic and personal planning. Who should seek assistance from Disability Resources and Services? - Any individual who has a documented disability, a medical or psychological diagnosis
- A recent High School graduate who received Special Education services including any resource support
- A individual who has a documented disability, even if documentation is not current
- An adult learner who recently returned to college, and has no current documentation, yet struggling in classes
When should Faculty or Staff referral to Disability Resources and Services? - When a student identifies they have a disability
- If a student has asked or appears to be in need of accommodations
- If a student has not self identified yet shows signs of struggling
- If a student does not meet academic expectations or classroom performance which would call for removal or placement in another course
Goal of DRS Services Is to develop strong and supportive working relationships with all DRS students. To provide learning opportunities which empower and promote independence, self-advocacy and independent students, as well as integration into campus life. Services may include: - Direct support services to students and/or parents
- Educate students on CGCC's DRS services, roles and function
- Educate students about the legal difference between secondary and post-secondary
- Educate students about the differences between accommodations vs. modifications
- Advocate for all registered DRS students, and CGCC Faculty and Staff
- Implementation and monitoring of all testing and classroom accommodations
- Provide referrals for campus and community resources
- Provide opportunities for students to integrate into campus life
- Provide assistive technology support and training
