What does an Oracle Database professional do?
Professionals that work with Oracle databases continue to be in high demand. These individuals may perform any of the following job tasks such as storing, retrieving, and manipulating data utilizing SQL; creating and maintaining the database; database planning and design; creating PL/SQL or Java application code that can be shared by multiple forms and reports; and providing application and user support. The level of involvement in any of these activities will depend on the size of the company and the employee's years of experience and expertise.

Why get the Oracle Database Operations Certificate of Completion at CGCC?

1 .The Certificate of Completion in Oracle Database Operations provides training for individuals, experienced or new to the database profession. These individuals need the skills to design, create, and maintain Oracle databases and create application code that can be shared by multiple forms, reports and data management tools.

Courses in The Certificate of Completion in Oracle Database Operations also help prepare students for the Oracle Certified Associate industry-certified examinations (Oracle Corporation OCA certifications). What classes do I need to earn an Oracle Database Operations Certificate of Completion ?

There are 4 courses that you must complete with a grade of "C" or better to earn the Oracle Database Operations Certificate of Completion at CGCC. They are CIS119DO (Introduction to Oracle: SQL), CIS119DP( Oracle: Database Administration), CIS164AB( Oracle: PL/SQL Programming), and CIS164AG (Oracle: Data Modeling and Relational Database Design). To complete all courses in one year CIS64AG and CIS119DO can be taken the first semester, and CIS164AB and CIS119DP together the second semester. Please see the corresponding checksheets.

How to I become industry-certified by Oracle Corporation?
Certification is done by Oracle. To be certified, you must successfully pass the Oracle Certified Association (OCA) certification exams as determined by Oracle. The current certification paths can be found at Oracle. Each of the exams has a cost, usually about $100 per attempt. Exams must be taken at an authorized testing center. Information on registering for exams. The classes we offer at CGCC prepare students for Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) exams. This is the first level certification for Oracle professionals and is required before testing for an Oracle Certified Professional. Oracle certification depends on successful completion of Oracle certification exams, not on completion of the courses at CGCC, although successful completion of the courses helps to prepare you for the industry exams. Potentially, students could earn both the OCA Database Administrator and the OCA Application Developer certifications with courses they take at CGCC!

How long will it take me to finish?
The majority of Oracle classes meet for approximately 3 hours per week for 16 weeks, the length of our usual semester. Some classes may be offered in a 6 - 8 week format but require students to complete more work outside of class. At the rate of two classes per semester, the entire sequence would take 2 semesters or 1 year to complete. To complete in one year CIS164AG and CIS119DO can be taken the first semester, and CIS164AB and CIS119DP together the second semester. However, class availability can fluctuate based on student demand.

What are the prerequisites and what other courses should I take to be successful?
There are no prerequisites to start the CIS119DO or the CIS164AG courses if the student has prior work experience in the information technology field and the instructor grants permission. For students who are new to computers and the field of information technology, students will need to take CIS105 (Survey of Computer Information Systems).

Prior to taking CIS119DP (Oracle: Database Administration) it is recommended that students take CIS162DL (Linux). For those students that have no programming experience, CIS150 (Programming Fundamentals) can be very beneficial before taking CIS164AB (Oracle: PL/SQL Programming). Taking these courses will greatly increase the chances of success. The decision should be made by the student with input from the advisor and with consideration given to many factors. We want our students to be successful and get the most out of all of our courses.

What is the cost for the program?
The cost of each class is based on the usual tuition cost for the student. There may be additional course fees for these classes in the range of $25 - $35 . The cost for books is separate and can range from approximately $50 - $150 per class. Books may be purchased at the campus book store.

Can I get a degree with these classes?
YES!  The Oracle Database Operations CCL can be applied to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Information Technology offered at Chandler-Gilbert.   The  IT AAS degree also includes other classes in the Information Technology area to help students develop knowledge and skills in many computer areas. A certificate or degree completed at CGCC can enhance your marketability within the computer field. The AAS in Information Technology currently transfers to Arizona State University Polytechnic into the Bachelor of Applied Science. Please discuss with an advisor to determine which BAS is right for you!

We recommend that you speak with an advisor before registering for these classes. New student enrollment information can be found at www.cgc.edu/enrollment.
