Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How can I get Blackboard help?
A: You can contact the people who help with Bb courses through the Virtual Tom Link: Virtual Tom

Q: Why do I see my Bb course and my students are telling me they don't see it when they log in?

A: Your course must be made available for students to see it. When they are created, courses in Bb are, by default, "not available." To make your course(s) available: go to the Control Panel, choose Settings, choose Course Availability and click on the "Yes" button then click on the Submit button.

Q: Why do I see a Blackboard site but don't see students?

A: You may be looking at a template or a course that has not been associated with a section number. Courses are associated with sections numbers to load students automatically through an interface process that links Bb Enterprise and SIS. To link a course, use the Virtual Tom interface: Virtual Tom

Q: Can I move content from one course to another without having to go into each course?

A: Yes. You can copy and paste content by going to where your content is in the control panel, clicking on the "Copy" button (between Modify and Remove). Identify the destination course and content area using the drop-down menu and Browse button.

Q: Why do I need a separate ID for Bb Enterprise?

A: Bb Enterprise is a system shared by other colleges. Each college has a unique local ID and it would be a risk and troublesome to coordinate these ID systems for faculty and students. The MEID (Maricopa Enterprise IDentification) username and password also allows teachers and students from multiple colleges to use a single log on for all of their courses. Your MEID is also used for the MCCD Human Resource Management System. This allows you to access other important district resources. For more information, go to http://www.maricopa.edu/its/hrms.php

Q: Can I change my Enterprise ID?

A: Good question... no.

Q: What are the differences between Blackboard enterprise and the basic learning system we use now?

A: Most of what instructors see will not change. They will, however, notice that a few features are available. For example, you can cut/copy/paste items between courses. The other main difference is that Building Blocks, features and functions that can be added to Blackboard, are available with the enterprise edition, not the basic learning system we now have.

Q: Who will we contact if we need assistance?

A: Currently, faculty contact Tom Foster, Instructional Technologist at 480-732-7179 and students can contact the Computer Lab at 480-732-7221. Students can also get help in person in the Computer Lab from the learning associates there.

Q: How much training is required to use Blackboard?

A: Not much. Blackboard is fairly easy to use and one can be functional with a quick tutorial lesson. Workshops and one-on-one training opportunities are available through Tom Foster or through Faculty Development.

Q: Can we expect a long-term commitment from the district for the support of Blackboard?

A: That is our expectation. The district has moved toward a full support model with all phases of Blackboard including long-term planning and upgrades in software and hardware. The district technology organization, ITS, works in concert with the Blackboard Alliance.

Q: How do I find my User Name and Password?

A: To login to Blackboard Enterprise, you must use your Enterprise ID username and MEMO email password. For more information click on Login Instructions on the left.

Q: What will be the process be to report problems with Blackboard?

A: You will continue to communicate problems the same way you do now. Larger maintenance and other problems will be communicated between our technical staff and the district technology staff. In addition, PerceptIS will handle 24/7 help calls for faculty and students. See the following Q & A.

Q: Who will provide after hours support for Blackboard problems?

A: PerceptIS is a third-party 24/7 support provider that can handle support after hours for faculty and students. Contact them by phone at 1-888-994-4433 or visit their web site at: http://help.perceptis.com/maricopa/index.php.

Q: What is the role of the campus Blackboard Advisory Group?
A: The local Bb Advisory Group has the role of asking key questions from and communicating answers to faculty. Besides individuals
representing instruction, there are also technical and support people on the Advisory Group.

Q: What is the Blackboard Alliance and what colleges are participating in the group?

A: The district Blackboard Alliance is a representative group of participating colleges whose mission addresses the needs of faculty and students. They act as an advisory group to the district technology leadership and also coordinate training for Blackboard and allied products. Along with Chandler-Gilbert, Paradise Valley, South Mountain, Estrella Mountain, Gateway, and Scottsdale are participating. Additionally, Phoenix College and Glendale Community College have joined the Alliance.
